Photos in this category may be of either a silhouette or a shadow. A silhouette is the image of a person, animal, object, or scene represented as a solid shape of a single color, usually black, with its edges matching the outline of the subject. Backlighting is used to create the silhouette. The interior of a silhouette is featureless, and the silhouette is usually presented on a light background, usually white. Simply stated, a shadow is a dark area where light from a light source is blocked by an object. Subjects can be a person, place, animals, or objects. Any photo that uses shadows as a prominent part of the composition, to enhance the contrast of a subject or as the subject itself, is shadow photography.
